5-hour Pre-licensing Driving Course

The New York Online Pre-Licensing Course is a training course approved by the NY DMV that provides information to new drivers such as basic road rules, safe driving concepts, defensive driving skills, and other factors that affect driving to help drive them safely.

For how long will my Pre-licensing Course Certificate be valid?
Your Pre-licensing Course Certificate is valid for one year from the date it is issued. If your Pre-licensing Course Certificate expires, you must complete the course again to receive the certificate required to schedule a road test. Your certificate must be valid on the date that you make your Road Test appointment but can be expired on the date you take your road test.

Is the Online Pre-Licensing Course mandatory in New York?
In New York, it is required to complete a Pre-licensing Course or a high school or college Driver Education Course.

What do I need to start my online Pre-Licensing course?
You must already have a valid New York Photo Learner Permit before starting the course.

How long does it take to complete the NY Online Course?
Currently, the New York state rules require that the courses be a minimum of 270 minutes (4.5 hours) of instruction time. You have 30 days to complete it and you can take the course in stages with no stop and start time. Our prelicensing class is accessible 24/7 and allows you to log in and out whenever you need.

Can I take the course in increments or do I have to take the whole course at once?
You can log out and back into Online Pre-Licensing Course as often as you like! The information will pick up where you left off. You have 30 days from the date of registration to complete the course.

How long does it take to get my Notification of Completion?
Your Notification of Completion email will be emailed to you immediately upon completion of the course.

What steps do I need to take after I pass the New York Pre-Licensing Course online?
You will be notified within 48 hours that you completion has been accepted by the DMV. Once that notification is received, you will be able to schedule your road test with a DMV office.

Do I have to take quizzes in this course?
Yes. Each chapter contains a brief quiz with 3 multiple-choice questions.
